a think tank on fish issues & beyond

bridging the gaps between knowledge, imperatives, and practice

We want to raise awareness so more persons…

  • respect aquatic life and its welfare.
  • secure food and health.
  • foster livelihoods and viable local economy.
  • recognise that our destiny lies in the oceans.

because we know that…

  • fish (including seafood) is crucial for providing a considerable part of humankind with proteins, mainly in the global South, whereas industrialised countries may switch to plant-based alternatives to profit from ingredients otherwise gained from fish.
  • fishes and aquatic animals are the last big wild resource of protein and related nutrients.
  • fishes and aquatic animals represent the by far the biggest biodiversity still existing and preventing the ocean is the source of life from deterioration.
  • fish provides livelihood to millions of humans.
  • fish is a major global commodity, providing the global South with income and jobs.
  • fishes and aquatic animals are sentient, i. e. they not only experience pain but may suffer from human impact.
  • fishes and all aquatic animals living in the wild are subject to human impacts by waste dumping, shipping traffic, tourism, sand grabbing, deep sea mining, fisheries, waste water and garbage from agriculture, industries, and towns, offshore (and onshore) aquaculture, buildings next to the beach, etc.
  • fishes and all aquatic animals kept for farming are subject to unnatural living conditions, and only few species may experience welfare under improved conditions.

And what could be done now?
